ABOUT

Lauren Januhowski is an American textile artist based in France who blends autobiographical narratives with women's stories. She creates works by assembling monotype-printed, embroidered, and woven fabrics inspired by family traditions and American quiltmaking practices. Her colorful layers evoke emotional and physical depth, bringing to life characters shaped by everyday life and community. A graduate of Cooper Union (2015) and the École des Arts Décoratifs of Paris (2020), she exhibits internationally.

  • Lauren Januhowski (born 1992 in Houston, Texas) develops a body of work that interweaves autobiographical narratives with the stories of the women around her. Each piece is constructed as an assemblage of monotype-printed fabrics, brought together through sewing, embroidery, or weaving.

Januhowski’s process is marked by a meticulous attention to detail; it is a ritual that connects her to the heritage of textile practices within her American family. In her work, color guides emotional perception, while embroidery invites an intimate and intentional observation. The layering of transparent fabrics suggests a depth that is both physical and psychic. Through the allegories that constitute her work, she gives voice to female figures shaped by her daily life, her intimacy, and her community exchanges. Much like a patchwork, her work offers a complex and plural image of the female condition, while actively questioning the emotional and societal challenges women face.

A 2015 graduate of The Cooper Union (New York), Lauren Januhowski later attended the École des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, where she graduated from the "Printed Image" department in 2020. Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, notably at Galerie Treize-Dix, Magasins Généraux, Galerie Christian Berst, La Grande Halle de La Villette, and Art Basel. More recently, she presented a solo exhibition at Gallery BimBam in 2024 and is currently preparing a solo show with Marquesa Gallery (Madrid), scheduled for April 2026. In 2024, she continued her research through two major residencies: at the Abbaye de Maubuisson (Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, France) and at the Kalhath Institute (Lucknow, India) as part of the Villa Swagatam program.
