RESIDENCY : VILLA SWAGATAM
October 2024 - December 2024, Kalhath Foundation, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.
During my residency at the Kalhath Foundation through Villa Swagatam and the French Embassy
in India, India’s textile traditions offered an opportunity to learn and collaborate with Kalhath’s master artisans, further deepening my understanding of embroidery and transforming my approach to image-making. The body of work I made during this residency reflects on personal narratives of spiritual and physical journeys, inspired by the architectural details and vibrant colors of Lucknow. It also explores the complex feelings of being a woman in foreign space, while drawing on the warmth, spirituality, and cultural exchanges I experienced.
Through these pieces, my work aims to serve as a bridge between past and present, self and community, and craft and storytelling. The residency at the Kalhath Foundation offered an invaluable opportunity to engage with artisans whose generational expertise in embroidery connects them to a rich lineage of textile traditions. Their meticulous craftsmanship challenged me to rethink my approach to making by engaging more deliberately with materials and techniques.
