Marquesa Gallery presents “What We Invoke / Lo que invocamos,” the first solo exhibition of Lauren Januhowski (1992, Houston, Texas) in Spain. The American artist based in Paris has spent years building her own language in which thread, embroidery and monotypes on fabric become tools of invocation, a practice that interweaves memory, feminine heritage and ancestral tradition in works that function as portals between the visible and the invisible. The exhibition, curated by Victoria Rivers, grounds the character of the project through a curatorial practice that understands curation as a living ecosystem where the ancestral and the contemporary intertwine.

Her work moves through the multiple metamorphoses of the sacred, from nuns and their cloistered wisdom, lives surrendered to the act of faith and communion, to the silence that is also a form of cloth, solitude converted into a field of energy, contemplation as the only technique necessary. Januhowski recovers a genealogy of women who created in the margins and made them the center. Because community has always been the true loom, the threads held between bodies, between voices, between hands that pass knowledge along without anyone ever writing it down.

What We Invoke / Lo que invocamos is oral tradition made contemporary, porous to history, to the women who preceded her, to the century she inhabits. She has absorbed without losing her center, a maker of identities, recreating from her own perspective what others kept in silence.
