WALKING IN LUCKNOW

“WALKING IN LUCKNOW” is a series of embroideries made while in residency at the Kalhath Foundation in Uttar Pradesh, India as a 2024/2025 Villa Swagatam Laureate.

During my two-month residency at the Kalhath Foundation in Lucknow (October–December 2024), I immersed myself in India’s rich textile history while confronting post-colonial preconceptions I had been taught about its culture. Collaborating with master artisans whose generational expertise in embroidery connects them to a profound lineage of textile traditions, I deepened my understanding of embroidery and redefined my approach to image-making through their meticulous craftsmanship. The resulting works draw on the architectural details and vibrant colors of Lucknow to reflect personal narratives of spiritual and physical journeys, exploring the complex feelings of being a woman in a foreign space while also embracing the warmth, spirituality, and cultural exchanges I experienced. Ultimately, my practice during this residency sought to build bridges between past and present, self and community, and craft and storytelling.
